Chapter Fourteen

Holy crap on a cracker! Ms. Marble’s first husband was Lucy’s lover. Savannah couldn’t believe it. Or maybe she just didn’t want to believe it. She idolized Lucy Arrington. And she couldn’t idolize a woman who would cheat with her best friend’s husband. Everyone in town knew that Maybelline Marble and Lucy had been friends. Ms. Marble’s father had been the foreman of the Arrington Ranch for years. Lucy and Maybelline had grown up together. How could Lucy do that to her?

Maybe she hadn’t. Maybe Savannah’s mind was playing tricks on her. She’d just seen the picture of Lucy and Justin Bonner at Mr. Sims’s. Maybe Dirk holding Gracie in the same pose had made her conjure up things that just weren’t real. Like the same nose. And the same jawline. And the same cocky smile.

Dirk released Gracie, and when she glanced over and saw Savannah, she pulled Dirk across the street. “Are you ready to go to lunch?” She paused. “Savannah? Are you okay? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

Pretty much she had. Savannah pulled her gaze away from Dirk. “I’m fine,” she said in a voice that didn’t sound like her own. “I was just . . . thinking how cute you and Dirk look together.” And how it would break Dirk’s heart if he ever found out that his great-grandmother had cheated with Ms. Marble’s husband. Dirk loved Ms. Marble like a grandma. Everyone did. She was the sweetest little old lady in town. And if Dirk was heartbroken by the news, just think how it would devastate Ms. Marble. Savannah had to be wrong. She just had to be.

But all the puzzle pieces fit. Lucy called her lover Honey Bee. Bonner started with a B. Lucy named her daughter Bonnie. Bonner. Bonnie. But maybe those were all just coincidences. Just great big coincidences.

“Is there a wart on my nose, Savannah?” Dirk asked.

She realized she’d been staring again and forced a laugh. “Sorry. I guess I’m not used to seeing such handsome cowboys.”

Dirk arched an eyebrow. “Funny, but you’ve never been affected by my good looks before.” He held out a hand to Jennifer. “Dirk Hadley.”

Savannah suddenly remembered that Luke’s mom was standing there. “Forgive my rudeness. This is Luke’s mom, Jennifer Slater. Jennifer, this is Dirk and his wife, Gracie Lynn. Dirk and Gracie are Raff’s cousins and can vouch for him.” She looked at Gracie and Dirk. “I was just telling Jennifer about what a sweet, caring man Raff—”

Before she could finish, Raff came out of the sheriff’s office with Luke. He didn’t look sweet and caring. He looked annoyed and seemed to be getting after Luke. “You want the rights of a man, you better start acting like one. Men don’t run from their problems.
